Over thirty-five years ago Sister Hernandez had the vision to bring together other like-minded Alpha Kappa Alpha women to charter Xi Kappa Omega chapter. It is because of her hard work and dedication that we are here today.

About Our Servicing Area - Ventura County

This sacred land is located on the Pacific coast and sits on the indigenous lands of the Chumash and other native indigenous peoples in Ventura County.  We are 30 miles south of Santa Barbara and 40 miles north of Los Angeles.  Ventura County has a Mediterranean climate, year round.  You will always find people surfing, jet skiing, sailing in boats, or playing volleyball on one of our beaches.  Adjacent to the mighty Pacific is a long stretch of mountains that serve as great hiking locations camping sites and, weather permitting, you can even play in the snow at the higher elevations.  We have two golf courses, dog parks, skateboarding parks, and restaurants galore from food trucks to fine dining and everything in between!

Ventura County has great shopping at the Camarillo Outlets, two malls and several shopping centers including The Collection where you can live, work, shop, eat, and play!  If you’re not careful, you could bump into Oxnard natives, Anderson .Paak and Miles Brown from Blackish, Ventura native Kevin Costner, and Thousand Oaks residents, Jamie Foxx and Rebe Jackson (Michael Jackson’s sister).

Ventura County has three Junior colleges and two universities California Lutheran University and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) university, Cal State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) both with very active Black Student unions as well as many African American professors.  There are two military installations: The Naval Construction Battalion (CBC) which is the largest employer in the county, and Point Mugu Air Force Base, both of which are home to the US Navy, US Air Force, US Marines, and the Coast Guard.  The 2nd largest employer is the County of Ventura, led by Alpha Kappa Alpha woman and CEO, Dr. Sevet Johnson.  Ventura County also has an international port, The Port of Hueneme (why-nee-me), where automobiles, tropical fruits, seafood, heavy equipment machinery, and fuel are delivered and shipped out throughout the state and the country!

This area is an agricultural hub for the country.  We grow lemons, limes, avocados, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, green leafy vegetables, and it’s the strawberry capital of the world!  Ventura County is also a very diverse area where many languages in addition to English, are spoken: Spanish, Tagalog, Farsi, and the indigenous language of Mixteco, to name a few.  Several cultural festivals are hosted throughout the year: Martin Luther King, Jr. program, Juneteenth Celebration, the Salsa Festival, Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the dead), the Insect Festival, the Parade of Lights features boats decorated with lights, sailing in Channel Islands Harbor at Christmas, and air shows featuring military and private pilots performing amazing stunts in the air.

The African American population is 2.2%.  But we’re here and we’re represented by several black churches, four Divine Nine organizations: Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, and of course Alpha Kappa Alpha, The Links Incorporated, the Masons, and a black Golf Club: Pro Duffers.  There are several Farmers Markets, gyms, amateur sports teams to take advantage of.
